Home Sweet Home

Today, after a morning of play and carousel riding, we made the trek home from my parents house to ours.  Its about a three hour drive, pretty manageable nowadays!  We left right before nap, and didn't have to stop once.  A bit of holiday traffic, but not tons.  Whew!

While we were on the road, I remembered and recounted the hellish hellish trip from hell I made down there by myself a few summers ago, with two tiny infants about 2.5 months old, a toddler, and a carsick (puking) dog.  Thanks to various mishaps and TONS of traffic -- thanks in part to a roadside wildfire -- that trip took 7 hours (!) instead of 3.  The babies needed to nurse every hour or two and cried non-stop, I ran out of food for Emma and had to figure out how to buy dinner (a drive-through) and feed everybody (at a local park, by myself, with a two year old, two babies who needed to nurse and/or be lugged around in infant carseats, and a crazy dog who barked non-stop and couldn't be left in the car because it was a HOT HOT day).  OMG, pretty much any car trip since then has compared favorably.  Which I guess is good!

Anyway, the return to our frigid house today was enthusiastically embraced by the kids.   While they LOVE Grandma and Grandpa's house, the return to their familiar spaces and belongings is very satisfying for them.   Emma in particular is pretty thrown by changes in routines and she was pretty giddy with being home, saying how much she loved our house and our toys and our living room and our kitchen.  Aw.

We left the house last Tuesday in the middle of a cold snap/snow storm, and turned the heat down a little too much, I think, because it was COLD in here and is still not up to temp 4 hours later.  We immediately started a fire in the fireplace, though, and after tidying and cleaning up the disaster of a  house that we left, it's feeling really cosy and comfortable again.

As a sidenote, I've decided it is impossible for us to leave the house in decent shape when heading out on a trip -- the sheer amount of work and it takes to get us out of here means both adults (if we are both going) are consumed with packing and prep work, leaving the kids to their own devises for long periods of time.  I was WAY more prepared and organized this time than previous trips, but there is still so much stuff to do before we head out!  It's nuts!

One trip-related issue that is worrying me somewhat is that I'm fairly certain we left the baby monitor charger at my parents (!), which means some time tonight, we are going to be WITHOUT A MONITOR!  I realize my girls are 2.5 years old and no longer babies, that they sleep on the same floor as us, fairly close and could, in theory, come find us if they need us since they are no longer in cribs, but yeeps!  I am very monitor-dependent, partly because they still wakeup in the night, and with twins sharing a room I like to get there before they make a big fuss and wake the other.  And, I think they are more reassured and easily soothed back to sleep if I come to them promptly.

There is also the fact that we have worked and worked with them to stay in bed at night; that we will come to them if they need us.  This has worked well for us  -- while it is a pain for me to have to get up and go to them, sometimes multiple times a night (less now than a year or two ago, at least!!!), I feel better about them staying put and not roaming the house or risking them constantly coming to our room in the night.  But, will I hear them in the night without the monitor?  Will they wake up each other, or Emma in the next room over?  I realize at some point you ditch the monitor, but when?   We did it with Emma around this age I think, or maybe a tinge later, but she was reliably sleeping through the night and E & D are not yet.  And, her room is a smidge closer to ours, and I feel like I can hear her a lot better.

So.  Wish us luck tonight!  What are your thoughts on baby monitors -- do you use them with your kids?  When did you or will you stop, do you think?  Inquiring minds want to know!

Gramma Jammas

A few months ago, we headed down to visit my parents for a week.  While we were in Vancouver, we headed across the river to our favorite (awesome) fabric store.  There is NOTHING like this in Seattle, that I know of, anyway.  It's huge, has tons of great stuff, which inspires even me, the non-sewer.  Luckily, my mom IS a sewer, so we picked out some things and lined up some projects for her.  One of them being jammies for the girls.

The each picked out the fabrics themselves.  Delia was the most adament, from the moment she spied her fabric.  Spiders it was, nothing else would do!

Elsie probably would have been happy with anything -- but was quite content with the froggies.

Emma likes pink and purple and flowers and all things girlie right now, so she settled on pink flannel flowery fabric after some deliberation.

All in all they are super cute, and almost always the top choice when they are available! Thanks mom!

Last days of Summer

Back at the beginning of September, we visited my parents in Vancouver, Washington.  Elsie and Delia headed out by themselves for a stroll, so I tagged along.  Later we met up with Grandma and Emma to pick blackberries, play ball, and take a hike down in the woods.  Ah, summer.  Ah, home sweet home.

P.S.  The big maple tree they are walking under here at the end, and up above next to the dog house is where Lonnie and I were married. The picture following the dog house is lichen on the dog house roof.  My dad made it when I was a kid, and its been through two relocations!  Now, its filled with leaves (and perhaps rodents), though, not dogs!

Visit to Vancouver

We're in Vancouver!  No, not the one of Olympic fun, but the one where we hang with my parents and run my mom ragged (while I get quite a bit more moments of peace than usual).

Today we went to the Oregon Zoo, which is way different from back in the day when I was a kid (we kept getting lost or confused about how to get places with the stroller) but its still familiar enough to give me flashes of school field trip memories throughout.  We rode the train, which was my girls first train type ride ever I think!  They really liked it!  It was a shorter trip than I remember -- just around the zoo and back --  I guess in the summer they open up the long run that goes way up to the rose gardens which is SO much cooler (but probably not so toddler friendly).  I remember going up there and getting popsicles to have on the way back, ah, summertime....

Later back at home the girls got another ride...in the tractor wagon!  (Or is it a riding mower wagon?)  They also got to watch Grandpa Richard take a chainsaw to a very large tree.  Fun times!

Tractor Ride!

Its not all fun and games, though -- we had two more puking incidents, totally out of the blue (Elsie and Emma).  They seemed fine after it was over, of course, no other signs of sickness (and nothing since Friday now). OMG, please let this be over now!  I think it is, but now I can't really trust my instincts...

More pics tomorrow!  With all the awesome weather we've been outside and frequenting playgrounds a lot.  Nice!

Thanksgiving Reprise

I didn't really post about T-day (since I try not to advertise when we are not home!), so here's a brief summery of how it went. Pretty well!  We had a great drive down to Vancouver (WA) and back -- the kids are all turning into really decent car travelers now! Its great to not have to try to time things EXACTLY right in terms of naps and feedings and such -- they are a lot more flexible these days.  Though they did sleep for much of the way both times, woohoo!  It was only a 2.5 hour drive both ways, though, thanks to awesome timing and very little traffic.  Yeah!

We had lots of fun hanging out at Grandma and Grandpa's house, too!  Lots of playing with new and different toys, some fun walks to the park, a visit to see Real Live Chickens (where my mom gets eggs), plus a visit to OMSI (science museum) and Powells (just me and Grandpa).   And of course a fabulous dinner including my favorite -- cheese green bean casserole, ha ha! The only bad part of the trip was the HELLISH sleep that we had thanks to being in a new/different place.  Luckily, after a few days they seem to be back on track (knock on wood!).

Here are a few pictures (more starting here in the Nov gallery).

Yep, we're still rearfacing!
