Handmade Tree Blocks

After last year's successful joint project making handmade wooden people for the girls for Christmas, Lonnie and I knew we wanted to make more gifts this year.  One simple idea we grabbed from Teacher Tom's Blog: Tree Blocks.

Look at the awesome handmade ladder Lonnie made, too!

I had watched with interest Teacher Tom's various explorations with "tree parts", including this stacking one on pegs, that looks super cool but didn't go over as well with his preschoolers as he had expected.  I've always longed for these wooden tree blocks you can purchase, but spending money on simple cut, sanded wood seems a bit much, especially given our wealth of regular blocks!

So, after showing Lonnie some pictures, he grabbed some wood (cherry from a tree we cut down years ago, rock maple and mystery wood from my parents place) and started sawing.  He used a Japanese-style pull saw for the little ones and an old-fashioned bow saw for the larger ones (yes, he's a tool geek as well as a computer geek).   He made a wide range of sizes, from small ones fit in your hand to big chunks of log for larger construction. Free is a very good price!

I have seen them treated with a wax finish to seal them up and make a nice shine (which is tempting! I am a sucker for beeswax!) but we opted for au natural.  Some have cracked a bit as they have dried indoors, but nothing that compromises the fun.

I figured we'd have the most luck with blocks that were mostly playable freeform, combined with animals, people, and dolls  -- what our girls gravitate towards most often.  I hoped (and was correct) that they would pair well with some of the other things we were making for the girls, too -- tie dyed play-silks and little handmade fairy dolls (more coming soon on those!).

I will admit to being the one to build this one, not the kids!  Though Elsie had a fun time playing with it and dropping things into the "hammock"...

So far (as I expected, given Teacher Tom's results) the tree blocks have been greeted with curiosity and some independent play, but are not something the girls take out and really get into on their own.  If I start setting them up or playing around with them, they do jump in and play with them too!  I think the larger ones are a bit big and heavy for them to manipulate easily, at least indoors (looking forward to taking them outside when the spring and summer).  When they are up on the play table and pushed down for a crash, for example, it's kinda scary -- these are heavy logs falling!  I've had to make a few rules about not crashing them when others are there, or how to crash them without injuring themselves in the process.  With the smaller pieces, I'm not worried, though!

That's our old recycling bin in the background -- now home to the the blocks!

We have some plans to drill some holes in the sides of the larger blocks so the girls can poke things into them for "decoration" or to create fancier fairy homes -- things like pegs (perhaps to create tents or platforms for the fairy houses), feathers, glittery leaves and flowers (from the craft store floral aisle), and the like.  I have a feeling this will add some instant intrigue for them....stay tuned for pics when we finally get around to it!

Post-Christmas Fun

Still working on catching up with posts from the holidays!  I wanted to share this fun outing we did with my mom a few days after Christmas.  It was a busy morning, but so much fun.  We started by checking out a huge model train & village @ the Seattle Center (which we had actually seen in the very early setting-up stages, more than a month before!).  The girls were mesmerized.

Then we rode the monorail downtown.  The girls LOVED it!

Once downtown, we hopped on the holiday carousel.  Until somewhat recently, it's been hard to do carousels since I couldn't spot both little girls at the same time.  Now they are pros, though Emma was feeling a bit nervous since this one didn't have "seatbelts".  My cautious girl!

Though I know this would be great to do in the days leading up to Christmas, we've enjoyed it twice now after the big rush (last year, just Emma & I went, taking the bus, skipping the monorail portion) and had a blast -- no lines, no stress, still lots of fun!  Most everything was still up downtown, decoration-wise, though some of the window displays in the big stores were gone.  Oh well.

After the merry-go-round we walked a few blocks to check out the fancy gingerbread house display at a downtown hotel.  Cool, but hard for the kids to see without being held, and we were outnumbered 3-2.  We then hit the food court for some lunch before heading back to our car via another monorail ride.  This will definitely a tradition, we all had a blast!

Oh Christmas Tree!

While many folks I know avoid regular sized Christmas trees with toddlers, we decide to brave it.  So far, so good!  The girls LOVED the novelty of a TREE in the HOUSE, and had a lot of fun looking at and "helping" with the decorations.  Every day, I do have at least 10 ornaments to rehang, but that seems pretty manageable!

Busy Busy!

So many things going on around here! Today was Emma's preschool potluck, so this AM we baked banana bread and headed over for that.  Chaos at first, coming in late and trying to get three kids worth of food plated up with nowhere to sit and without anyone wandering off (it was just me) but we managed!  And once a table opened up we were golden.  Elsie and Delia LOVE school and had a blast, as did Emma.  Fun fun.

The last 3 nights I have been working madly on a crafting project that Lonnie and I are doing for the girls and I think my part is DONE!  Can't wait to show you more eventually.

Tomorrow afternoon Grandma E and Grandpa T arrive from Bejing!  Very exciting!  Looking forward to doing lots of fun activities and outings with them (and possibly getting another date night, woo hoo!).

Gotta go.  One more photo post coming now and then I HAVE to get to bed!

Happy Birthday to Me!

Its my birthday!  And the kids gift to me has been an awesome afternoon nap (them not me, though I enjoyed it nonetheless), woohoo!  Emma has been Very Excited and keeps telling me 33 is kind of like 3 and a half.  Um, okay, kid!  She is mostly focusing on CAKE but I have had to inform her that we are not having cake, we are having brownie sundaes.  So much better than cake, really...

------

One of Lonnie's presents to me was all my long lost poetry, mostly written in college and grad school, which had gotten sucked away into various dead computers.  He tore apart some computers to get my stuff off the hard drives, and even printed it and put it into a binder for me!  What a sweetie!  I am so glad to have it back and am going to be posting some of them in the near future.  I keep meaning to get back to poetry writing so maybe this will inspire me.

-----

I am getting excited about Christmas!  By the time my bday comes around you know its getting CLOSE!  I just scored an AWESOME brio train set for cheap on craigslist for Elsie and Delia, woo hoo!  Lonnie and I (mostly Lonnie up until now) has been working on some cool handmade toys for the kids too.  My job (the painting) is what is left and I need to get on it.   I would LOVE to post pics but this is all I am allowed to post about it until after the big day...

-----

Oh man, the talking is ramping up here and its just so amazing and funny to see what they will say next, and how they interact and copy or build on each others speech.  Delia pretty much echos everything we say, and is starting to narrate what she does whenever she knows the word.  I REALLY need to start writing this stuff down because its really funny sometimes, but I always forget by the time I sit down to blog at night.

One thing she gets Very Excited about is ice cream (at this age Emma didn't even know what ice cream WAS!), which she calls "cone!"because Emma always talks about ice cream CONES (even though we don't always eat it that way).  Today I was busy with something in the kitchen and had left the freezer door open and she stood there peering in and hollering CONE! CONE! CONE!  I think she was probably sad to realize what I was getting for her right then was frozen peas...

------

Elsie is also talking more and more, in her sweet little chirpy Elsie voice (I think its a bit higher and she uses more inflection than D), and one thing she is always saying is "read!" "read!" Pretty much any time she sees Lonnie after he has been gone or working, which is pretty cute.  She is really into books and reading and can sit for a long time looking at books.

-----

Have I mentioned how freaking much I love Emma's preschool? She loves it too and is doing really great there.  I am sad we will be on holiday break for a few weeks after this Thursday! It is literally 3 minutes from our house (driving), and it turns out they are modeled after the Reggio Emilia approach, something that I learned about in grad school and always thought sounded fabulous.  It is just the right size, and I love that its such a fun, happy place and has such an awesome community that we are now able to be a part of.  I really want to start hanging out with folks there more (doing some playdates and making some new "mom friends", ha ha) but its just hard since I am always running late AND chasing after two toddlers when I want to be schmoozing with the other grownups.  Ah well.  I am taking all three kids to a family potluck there on Friday by myself, we'll see how it goes and if I get to talk to anyone!  I know the girls will have tons of fun, in any case...

Busy!

Oh, blog, after such lovin' last month I am feeling bad about my neglect!  Alas.  It is the holiday season and all my spare moments have been filled by (online) shopping and gift brainstorming, tree and decoration wrangling and family event planning, among other things.  Tomorrow we are hosting a crowd of extended family for a casual holiday get-together, and I'm sure it will be lots of fun.  We'll see if the floor gets cleaned or the pile o mail filed(hidden), but there WILL be yummy food, at least!

Elsie and Delia are talking up a STORM, holy moly.  I love this stage, but also am so sad to see babydom go.  It is insane how fast they can pick up language though.  I think often one will hear the other say something (and see our response) and then give it a go themselves.  Which is the same as most devlelpomental things (sitting, crawling, walking, cup throwing), I've noticed.  They are always right on each others heels with this stuff.

Here are a few pics from last week to tide you over until I get a proper post up:
