Kicking the Habit
Last week I got sick. It was a horrible awful 24 hour sick, all sorts of horrible knocked flat out and begging for mercy sick, sicker than I ever remember being sick. It must have been rather contagious, too, since 4 out of the 9 folks who spent Christmas with us also had it at some point, too.
Luckily, Emma didn't catch it, and neither did Lonnie. But I was totally unable to perform basic Mama Duties, and at one point I didn't nurse for a 7 hour stretch, I think (it is all very hazy for me, you see). But Emma had 3 bottles and some solids during that stretch, and for once, I didn't care a whit what was happening with that. Just take her, I told him, do whatever.
I was ravenously thirsty and dehydrated, and I completely stopped both the Domperidone and the herb drops I have been taking continuously for my chronic low supply; I just couldn't fathom keeping them down. I expected that my supply would tank, and I think it did, for a bit; I didn't feel full at all after those 7 hours she didn't nurse. But I started drinking as soon as I could keep anything down, and, surprise of surprises...my milk came back without the meds! After 2 days we were back to supplementing the same as usual (1-2 bottles a day), and it has continued just fine as of now. Holy boobs, I'm drug free! I really expected to be on them for the long haul!
Day Three Nap Regime Update
Today started a little unexpectedly, with a 2 and 3/4 hour long nap in the AM (nursed down in the bed)! Hallelujah! Then then she slept for 25 minutes in the car in the afternoon on the way home from errands (we got her a new big girl carseat; not because she is anywhere near the weight limit for her infant seat, but because the straps were getting tight from her height). We didn't get to do any crib practice during the day, but after an hour of her fussing and trying to crawl out of our bed as I tried to get her to sleep tonight, I gave up, plopped her in there, and pulled out the laptop.
She went into hysterical scream mode with Daddio for about 35 minutes (it wasn't that bad, he said, but I heard it) and he alternately held her, gave her the bottle and, when she started falling asleep, put her in the crib. After a few rounds, she went down! And fell asleep! And is there now! Loggin' some good sleep time, our new crib sleeping babe. We will still bring her to bed with us when she wakes -- I have absolutely no desire to night wean or to quit cosleeping yet...but this is good, I think!
